Tapestry of Us
we made this
of ourselves and each other
of our labours, our sweat and love
of mindful souls
and soulful minds
fibres strewn and separated
spinning dizzy into warp and weft
find each other in the loom
at long last with purpose
cotton-soft yet stronger together
the spinner's hand caresses its shape
feet pedal to an internal rhythm
and from seed to blossom, and finally spent
a harvest taken unseen, stolen in morning gray
labour and art
each hand passes its wealth
seeds to fibres to threads to cloth
pistils to petals to pestle to color pedal's fine twine
vibrant and no less real for the journey
we made this
each hand a part of the making
the workers of soil
the planters and pickers
the spinner and weaver and rose petal puller
drying and extracting lover's colors from within
fragrance abundant only at the bench
a bath of dyes for thread patterns unknown
and when we made this, we were not together
how is it possible
that we, so far apart in days and distance
could combine to form this lovely tapestry?
a life apart, lived together now, united
in this great, warm, soft, love filled cloth
that we made
